About Us

Each day, another child sees a distorted picture of their future — hopes and dreams only large enough to fill the space of a wallet-sized photo.

Now, imagine if each child had a personalized toolkit that was created based on proven practices, community involvement and a needs assessment. Imagine what it would be like if students were surrounded by a community of support that empowered them to stay in school and achieve in life.

Today, this concept has become a reality through the work of Communities In Schools of North Carolina, the nation’s leading driver of student success.

Our Approach

Working with affiliates across nearly half of the state’s counties, we are changing the picture of education for more than 230,000 students. We combine the art of one-on-one relationships with the science of proven, evidence-based programs, and mobilize community resources and proven programs to achieve results and remove barriers that keep students from succeeding in school and life.

Increased attendance, improved behavior, and satisfactory coursework, in addition to parent and family engagement, are the focus areas guiding our work. Collectively, we call it the ABC + P model. Our school-based student support specialists identify students in danger of not achieving their potential, assess student needs and provide wrap-around interventions and resources to change outcomes.

Established in 1989, Communities In Schools of North Carolina is part of the national Communities In Schools network. Together, we are changing the picture of education for 1.3 million kids each year.

Communities In Schools has been recognized for its financial accountability/transparency and sound business practices. Review our most recent 990 (2013).
