97 Percent of Communities In Schools Students are Promoted to Next Grade, While 98 Percent of Seniors Graduated

Poverty is not always a barrier to success

Raleigh, N.C., March 6, 2018 – Today, Communities In Schools of North Carolina’s (CISNC) affiliate network released new data from the 2016-17 school year showing 97 percent of students served are promoted to the next grade despite high levels of poverty and other significant barriers to success. This impact is attributable to individualized integrated student supports or wraparound services provided to 162,813 students in local communities.

CISNC uses a proven model of student success, combining research- and evidence-based practices with regularly checking in and connecting with students, ensuring school attendance, improving behavior, closing gaps on coursework, and engaging parents. Starting early, CISNC is equipping students with the tools they need to succeed in the classroom — and in life.

“Closing employment gaps in North Carolina begins with preparing all students to reach their full potential,” said Jill Cox, chief operating officer of Communities In Schools of North Carolina. “I am so proud of the progress of each student we serve. Often the barriers they face are overwhelming, but we bolster their resilience, feed their aspirations, and cheer them on as they walk the path to graduation and their next steps in life.”

CISNC Results:

  • CISNC serves students in K-12 grades in 308 schools across the state.
  • 97 percent of students served by Communities In Schools were promoted to the next grade.
  • 98 percent of 12th-grade students served by Communities In Schools graduated at the close of the 2016-17 school year.
  • Students improved attendance in school, which increased the likelihood of academic success.

Last year, 146,298 students were supported by school wide programs, in addition to 16,515 who received targeted, intensive supports and services. School-based CISNC staff create unique plans to meet each student where they are and help them reach their full potential, including increasing attendance, improving behavior, and enhancing coursework — indicators of student success as identified by research from Johns Hopkins University. CISNC also collaborated with 20,360 parents and families to ensure the long-term success of each child served.

“CISNC doesn’t just address academic barriers, but they help the whole child,” said Laura Knapp, principal investigator for RTI International, CISNC’ third-party data-validation partner. “In addition to providing high-quality services to students, CISNC collects valuable data that allows us to measure and document student success in key areas to ensure efforts are moving the needle for students in our state.”
