Overcoming Obstacles: CIS Sucess Stories January 2011
January 26, 2011
Communities In Schools of North Carolina is excited to kick off a year-long video series called “Overcoming Obstacles: CIS Success Stories” with a first piece on mentoring, celebrating January 2011 as the 10th Annual National Mentoring Month.
In line with January as National Mentoring Month, this first video tells the wonderful story of a mentor/mentee match in Wilkes County, NC. Thanks to two CIS of Wilkes programs—Lunch Buddies and Friends of Youth—a relationship with a caring adult that began when Jessica Mitchell was a second grader has continued and deepened, and will no doubt prove to be life-long. Now a soon-to-graduate high school senior, Jessica and mentor “Miss Essie” can celebrate being an example of the very thing CIS sets out to do: to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.
