Overcoming Obstacles: CIS Success Stories June 2011
June 24, 2011
May and June mark the season of graduation, a momentous occasion for the entire community of support surrounding a CIS student. This month's "Overcoming Obstacles" video features Taylor Bryant, a graduating senior at the Mary S. Mosley Performance Learning Center (PLC) in Wilmington, NC, operated by CIS of Cape Fear. The CIS PLCs—highly innovative, nontraditional high schools that are a partnership between CISNC and the local school system—can currently be found in five of the state’s counties. This school year, 340 PLC students from Durham, New Hanover, Mecklenburg, Cabarrus and Cumberland Counties graduated. Previously, 735 students have graduated from these PLCs. These numbers stand out because these students would confirm that, had it not been for the PLC, each would have dropped out of high school. These are smart, capable students, who, throughout high school had fallen behind either by their own doing or because of circumstances beyond their control. Without the PLCs, they—Taylor Bryant—would have been just another failed measure. The PLCs show that every child has value and potential and can thrive in the right educational environment. Hats off to the PLCs and to all of our CIS graduates on such a tremendous accomplishment as graduation!
