CISNC Announces AmeriCorps Grant to Engage 170 Students as Mentors to K-12 Youth

Communities In Schools of North Carolina (CISNC), the leading dropout prevention organization dedicated to empowering students to stay in school and achieve in life, is pleased to announce a partnership with N.C. Campus Compact.  Through a grant from the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), 170 North Carolina college students will serve as AmeriCorps members in ADVANCE, AmeriCorps Dedicated to VA and NC Children Excelling.

“College students on our member campuses are eager to mentor youth,” shared Lisa Keyne, Executive Director of N.C. Campus Compact, a coalition of 46 UNC schools and community and independent colleges committed to engagement with the community. “We are pleased that the CNCS has funded this partnership and are eager to work with CISNC to connect college students with at-risk children in healthy, positive relationships.”

AmeriCorps members will serve as mentors for at-risk K-12 youth for up to 10 hours per week in various sites in North Carolina and Virginia.  CISNC and the VA Mentoring Partnership will partner to identify sites and provide training.
