• Overcoming Obstacles: CIS Success Stories May 2011

    May 26, 2011

"Programs don't change kids—relationships do." One of the most famous and most quoted of all CIS values, as stated once by Communities In Schools Founder and former President Bill Milliken. In this month's "Overcoming Obstacles" video, see for yourself how one caring adult, street gang outreach worker Travis Burrell, is daily pouring into the lives of young people at Ferndale Middle School in High Point, NC—young people who, without someone like Travis, are all too quickly on a track toward juvenile delinquency or worse. Burrell has himself walked a mile in their shoes and so now goes that extra mile to keep "his kids" from falling through the cracks. Click here for a beautifully-written blog post by multimedia producer Justin Cook, depicting his reflections on meeting Travis.

  • Overcoming Obstacles: CIS Success Stories April 2011

    April 21, 2011

Across the country, the month of April is celebrated as Volunteer Month, Volunteer Appreciation Month and Community Service Month. At Communities In Schools of North Carolina, we not only want to celebrate our nearly 10,000 volunteers who generously donate their time and energy to serving our state's children and youth, but also our students who are actively involved in giving back to their peers and community—a value identified by CIS as needed and deserved by every child. This month's "Overcoming Obstacles: CIS Success Stories" video features Chapel Hill High junior Cyerah O'Briant, a student involved in the CIS-affiliated Blue Ribbon Mentor-Advocate Program's Youth Leadership Institute (YLI), headed up by Graig Meyer. “Before YLI, I never thought much of helping others. The world would be a better place if more people gave back,” she says.

Be sure to visit CISNC's blog to read multimedia storyteller Justin Cook's reflections on working with Cyerah and Graig. "Watching Cyerah and Graig inspire each other reinvigorated my passion for storytelling," he says.

  • CIS Network in N.C. Helped 98% of Students Stay in School;  94% Graduate

    March 07, 2011

Communities In Schools of North Carolina announces the release of its network data from the 2009-2010 school year in two easily-accessible documents, CISNC’s Quick Facts 2009-2010 and the 2009-2010 Impact Report. Of the 139,429 youth served by the Communities In Schools of North Carolina network during the 2009-2010 school year, 33,350 were high school students. • The event dropout rate for those high school students that were followed for their progress in school was just 2.14%. • All CIS students are identified as being at-risk of dropping out of school, hence the reason for their being referred to CIS. • Of all the CIS high school students who did not drop out last year, 305 of them were either students who had decided to leave school or had already dropped out but then chose to give school one more chance. These students entered into one of only five CIS Performance Learning Centers (PLCs) in North Carolina and graduated in the 2009-2010 academic year. • Of our CIS high school seniors, 93.7% graduated.
