Our Initiatives -Service Learning
Research has shown that high quality service-learning opportunities improve academic achievement, school attendance and connect students to their communities. By providing students with an opportunity to give back, students can develop a lifelong habit of social responsibility and enhance their self-esteem. Service-learning is an important piece of Communities In Schools and its mission to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.
Through service-learning programs, community service becomes an integral part of enhancing teaching practices, student learning and problem solving. The classroom extends to the community as students, teachers and local agencies work together to improve the community in which they live. Communities In Schools of North Carolina runs Learn and Serve America in our state, which is a service-learning program created by the Corporation for National and Community Service.
During the 2010-2011 school year, Communities In Schools will use the Learn and Serve America grant to fund thoughtful K-12 service-learning projects across the state that address three goals: participant development, strengthening communities and fostering civic engagement. These goals will be accomplished through partnerships between schools and communities where the majority of the student population is at risk of dropping out. The deadline to apply for a Learn and Serve grant has passed. Please check back to learn more about our newly funded service learning projects and about next year’s deadline.
