Our Initiatives -Rural Communities

Students who live in rural communities often lack access to programs found in urban areas. Even when these services are available, transportation issues prevent students from getting the services they need the most. As a result, fewer than 7-in-10 rural students graduate from high school in North Carolina.

According to the report "Why Rural Matters 2009: State and Regional Challenges and Opportunities" from the Rural School and Community Trust, North Carolina also has high rural poverty rates and the second largest number of students living in concentrated poverty districts.  Nearly half of these students will not graduate from high school.

Because of the large rural population in North Carolina, Communities In Schools is committed to providing training and technical assistance for our rural communities whether or not they are part of the Communities In Schools network. This training includes fostering understanding between communities and individuals who come from generational poverty, as well as developing and creating mentoring programs.  Through faith partnership training, faith communities learn the best practices in partnering with local schools.  Our local affiliates also are well suited to serve their rural communities, providing services on both a school-wide and individual basis.
