Our Initiatives -Financial Literacy

Communities in Schools of North Carolina, in partnership with Career Cruising of Toronto, Canada, is proud to offer The Real Game, a financial and career literacy program, to middle school students across the state.  The Real Game is an interactive program that incorporates financial responsibility, knowledge and career building tracks into an electronic game that can be “played” in the classroom and online at home by students.  The fiscal literacy aspect of The Real Game software shows accurate U.S. data pertaining to salaries, expenses, mortgages, health care, child rearing and each aspect of adulthood.  Currently, CISNC has 51 licenses for The Real Game  to be used by CIS after school programs and education leaders in 19 counties.  This was funded by a grant from the Department of Education and each license was generously donated by CISNC to certain local affiliates.

In the upcoming year, CISNC will take a more direct role in training instructors to use The Real Game software and open up the program to both middle and high school students.  CISNC sees the immense value in reaching students at all ages to highlight the choices they make in school, and how it relates to the world they occupy when they graduate, especially focusing on those that are thinking of dropping out.  Our goal is to be the leading state agency in helping schools address financial literacy with their students, while offering effective measurable means to do so.
