Our Initiatives -AmeriCorps

CISNC is pleased to partner with N.C. Campus Compact, an Elon University-based coalition of 46 UNC schools and community and independent colleges committed to producing civically-engaged graduates, to engage North Carolina college students as mentors to K-12 youth.  Through a grant from the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), 170 college students will serve as AmeriCorps members in ADVANCE, AmeriCorps Dedicated to VA and NC Children Excelling.

AmeriCorps members serve as mentors for at-risk K-12 youth for up to 10 hours per week in various sites in North Carolina and Virginia.  CISNC and the VA Mentoring Partnership have partnered to identify sites and provide training.  The AmeriCorps members serve as mentors for up to three at-risk K-12 students, providing guidance and support in goal-setting, conflict resolution, self-esteem and leadership development, and working with mentees to complete at least two community improvement projects.  Some volunteers at high schools use CIS’ recently-developed Charting for Success (CFS) Curriculum that assists students in planning and preparing for post-secondary careers and education.

On a national level, AmeriCorps engages 80,000 Americans of all ages and backgrounds in service to meet critical needs. Its members serve through more than 14,000 nonprofit and faith-based organizations in rural and urban communities throughout the nation.  AmeriCorps is an essential part of the solution to many of the social challenges facing our communities.  CISNC is thrilled that N.C. Campus Compact recognizes the value in mentoring and has established the opportunity for AmeriCorps members to dedicate their time to our youth.
