First Books
Communities In Schools of North Carolina, Random House Children's Books
and First Book teamed up to provide
200,000 free books to students throughout North Carolina. These brand
new, first quality books, were distributed to all thirty-one Communities
In Schools local programs. The donated First Books and activity kits are
valued at $1,000,000. The books will be given to children living in families
with limited means, who are enrolled in pre-kindergarten through middle
school grades. Here is one example of how CIS of Cabarrus County distributed
books at Harvest Fair!
Communities In Schools of Cabarrus County--in collaboration with Smart
Start, Cabarrus Health Alliance, Safe Kids Coalition, Concord Fire and
Life Safety, and other community agencies--held a Harvest Health and Safety
Fair on October 19 in a low-income neighborhood park. Parents and children
were very excited about receiving free books and activity kits through
the First Book/ Random House Book distribustion. More than 200 members
of the community were given books and activity kits and participated in
a variety of other activities which included car seat checks, a bike rodeo,
face and pumpkin painting, and health and safety exhibits!
